Both Sides of the Argument

dl-header

A term used to describe the rhetorical scheme of arguing both sides to determine the episteme of both viewpoints. It's also the name of this project.

The purpose of this project is to argue both sides of many arguments in photography:

Is photography art -- merely for the self-gratification of the photographer and aesthetic pleasure of the viewer?
Is photography journalism -- merely for the documentation of people, places, things and events?
Is photography a mirror into our own souls, forcing introspection -- or is it a door into worlds we've never experienced?
Is photography an objective record of the event photographed -- or is it subjective based on infinite factors and perceptions?
Is photography just pretty (or ugly) pictures -- or is it visual rhetoric?

Or maybe...

Maybe it's more than the sum of its parts? Maybe instead of
either-or it can be both-and. But maybe not.

We aim to find out. And we want you to help.

We don't want you to help with long essays in APA style with perfect margins. We don't want you to help with ranting and raving screeds sent by email with curse words and more exclamation points than you have fingers. We don't want you to help by sitting there pondering or reading tomes of heavy post-structuralist dissertations.

We want you to help by finding out for yourself. By taking pictures.

Read the submissions page for guidelines and then send us your photos at dissoi.logoi.journal@gmail.com.

Updated Sept. 1, 2007:
We had hoped to have the first issue out by now, but what with summer and the State Fair and cheese curds and whatnot, we're running a bit behind.
With your help and submissions, we're hoping to have that first issue up and going before the leaves fall off the maples.

We still have a
Big Plan, too.
